SMITHTOWN — Local resident Mitchel Shapiro has helped many people carry on conversations through his program Helping America Hear. Shapiro, who needed hearing aids since childhood, understands firsthand the difficulties that come with loss of hearing. Determined to give back to the community, Shapiro launched The Foundation for Sight and Sound in 2004 with programs fit for low income clients who have difficulty hearing and seeing.
