WEST HEMPSTEAD — "Respect defeat and embrace victory" was the theme at the second annual Kyodai Invitational Karate Championship. The event is the largest in the tri-state area. More than 200 competitors from 28 schools participated in the tournament. Instructors and participants wanted to remind people that martial arts are not just about competition and violence that sports such as mixed martial arts may cause it to be perceived as, but about self-improvement and discipline. Proceeds from this year's event are going to Haiti to build an athletic center.
