Without NHL participation, North Bellmore native gets to live his Olympic dream

Matt Gilroy, an ice hockey player, will represent the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics

NORTH BELLMORE — Matt Gilroy was once a walk-on for the ice hockey team at Boston University, winning a national title and being named the nation's best college hockey player before his career took him to several different NHL teams and now to Finland, where he lives and plays professionally. This year, he will get to add "Olympian" to that career resume.

With the National Hockey League deciding against lettings its players participate in the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the United States has had to look for new players to make up the ice hockey team that will represent the nation. Players like Gilroy, who otherwise might not have gotten a chance to represent their nation in international competition, now have the chance to see their Olympic dreams come to fruition.

"To walk into an Olympic locker room with the red, white and blue on it, just to represent the country is special and then the special promise I've been able to keep, it's going to be an unbelievable feeling," Gilroy said.
