The New York State Board of Regents voted to cut down the amount of testing by a third on English and Math exams on Tuesday.

"It is the first step in the right direction. However, it does not get to the heart of the problem," Bellmore Schools Superintendent Joe Famularo said,

Superintendent Famularo says there is more work to be done.

This past March, more than 97,000 Long Island students opted out of the English exam, amounting to over 50 percent of the student population.

"We need a new assessment that is developmentally appropriate which provides immediate feedback to teachers and ultimately drive instruction," Farmularo said.

The cuts made this week are for students grades three through eight and it will cut the amount of testing from six days to four days.
