PD: 16 people arrested in major Suffolk heroin, cocaine takedown

Officials say they dismantled network of dealers who stashed drugs in Central Islip, Brentwood homes

BRENTWOOD — The undoing of an alleged heroin and cocaine network led Suffolk County authorities to $125,000 in cash, weapons, some pricey cars like an Aston Martin, and a Rolex worth more than $50,000 dollars.

The investigation, one that involved wiretaps, led to 16 arrests, 12 of which are from Suffolk County.

Heroin is often sold in glassine envelopes, each one dose, but not, in this case, says Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota, leaving users to measure the drugs themselves

“Therefore there is the strong possibility of overdoses, and we believe there have been,” Spota said.

The alleged ringleader, Oswald Alfaro of Jackson Heights, was taking in roughly $12,000 every three days, prosecutors say.

“He pushed his runners in a way that we've never seen before. These resellers were working shifts from 8 in the morning till midnight. They were allowed to take half an hour break. We learned this from the wiretaps,” Spota said.

Spota says Alfaro had an extremely large customer base, many who bought drugs every day.

“The resellers were making home deliveries to areas in Ronkonkoma, Bohemia, East Islip, Islip Terrace, Oakdale, Bay Shore and Smithtown,” he said.

Prosecutors say the drugs were stashed at a home in Central Islip and in Brentwood; officials say there were children living in both homes prior to the bust.

The district attorney warned young people who may be tempted to sell drugs that the lifestyle isn’t worth the crime.

“They may wear watches for a period of time. They may have money in their pockets for a period of time, when he's up in the correctional facility upstate, he's not wearing any of those watches and he's not going to have two cents in his pocket,” Spota said.

Brentwood Neighbor Melissa Andolf says she never saw any unusual activity at the house but that she’s happy that officials stepped in.

“I'm glad that they found it, glad they found out it happened and glad those people will not be here anymore,” Andolf said.
