ELMONT — A 2-month-old baby and his 37-year-old mother were brutally attacked by a pit bull on Thursday.

Police officials say that the victims and the owner of the dogs live in the same home, but use separate entrances.

"The mother, while she was carrying a child in a car seat carrier, knocked on the door of the residence. As soon as the occupant opened the door, the two pit bulls rushed out of the door," Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun said.

As the two pit bulls rushed out the door, LeBrun says one of them became aggressive.

“One pit bull is a 4-year-old male. That pit bull attacked the mother, inflicting very, very serious leg wounds. The pit bull then went up to the 2-month-old child in the baby seat and did bite that child around the head and facial area,” LeBrun said.

Good Samaritans were able to pull the dog off the baby.

The child and mother were both sent to a local hospital, where the 2-month-old is currently undergoing surgery.

“This child received very, very serious wounds to the facial area and cranium area,” he said.

Both pit bulls are being held at the Hempstead Animal Shelter pending the ongoing investigation into whether the dogs have a violent history.

No charges have been brought to the dog owner.
