BRENTWOOD — Nassau County Reps. Tom Suozzi and Kathleen Rice joined other U.S. lawmakers in El Paso, Texas, over the weekend to visit the border and speak with customs and border patrol. They saw first-hand the facilities in which detained immigrants have been living.

"Illegal immigration was not caused by this administration because it's been going on for 30 years. ... But this newest problem is directly related to a recent chance in policy by this administration that caused the system to break at the seams, and there was not enough room to house these kids, and it was being done in a hap-hazard way," said Suozzi.

Several weeks ago, President Donald Trump's administration implemented the "Zero Tolerance" immigration policy, which made border patrol agents separate undocumented immigrant families and send them to detention centers. The representatives said that the immigration crisis is something that should be taken care of with all sides of the government.
