A Facebook post by a teacher has been making the rounds on social media and generating controversy in Smithtown.

The post, apparently made by Smithtown High School West world language teacher Veronica Welsh, called out students who wore Donald Trump gear during Spirit Week.

In the comment, she insinuates that student Trump supporters are racist.

The post reads: “This week is Spirit Week at Smithtown HS West. It's easy to spot which students are racist by the Trump gear they're sporting for USA Day."

Parents and students say they're disappointed.

“I think it's awful. In 2016, it really shouldn't be said. It's not appropriate,” 11th grader Jacqueline said.

When asked for a comment, the district superintendent issued this statement to FIOS1 News:

"Upon learning of this matter, the district took immediate action. As this is a matter of personnel, we are limited to sharing specific details, but please be advised that we are handling this in a professional manner and all appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken."

A district spokesperson says that Welsh has been administratively reassigned, but would not elaborate.

The Facebook post has since been taken down.
