Giant hockey rink nestled into heart of Citi Field in preparation for Winter Classic

A behind-the-scenes look at the baseball field's transformation

NEW YORK, N.Y. — For the 10th anniversary of the National Hockey League Winter Classic, the Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres will face off at Citi Field for the first time ever.

Since Citi Field is usually used for baseball games, a team of 250 people is building a large hockey rink for the New Year’s Day game. To create the massive rink in accordance with all NHL safety standards, a one-of-a-kind mobile refrigeration unit and rink system were designed. It has a 300-ton capacity to create the massive sheet of ice. And once constructed, it is a 24-hour job to keep the ice in pristine condition for the players.

Steve Mayer, the chief content officer for the NHL, says the conditions at Citi Field have been fantastic and they are ahead of schedule with the construction.
