Residents skip the Thanksgiving turkey to get ahead on their holiday shopping

Customers take advantage as some retailers offer large discounts on merchandise

After the turkey comes the sales-- and shoppers are not waiting.

People across the region lined up around the block of retailers that jumped ahead of Black Friday and shoppers were definitely excited to catch deals. Some stores offered between 70 to 75 percent off and buy one get one free-- which shoppers say is really hard to resist.

A JC Penney was the first store to open up at the Roosevelt Field Mall, where shoppers waited for a little more than two hours. When the doors to swung open, the holiday shopping season officially got underway

And for the shoppers who showed up early, they received a special coupon that could be worth $10$100 or even a whopping $500.
