Former Stony Brook Seawolves tight end vies for spot in NY Giants roster

Will Tye says ‘it’s a blessing’ to play football at the professional level

The New York Giants are loaded at tight end this season. Fighting for a spot in that five-man battle is Stony Brook University graduate Will Tye and the former Seawolves star knows his job is on the line.

"It’s definitely shocking just to be here. You gotta be humble, but make sure it's a blessing to be here" Tye says.

From a undrafted 2015 practice player to the Stony Brook's first ever NFL player Tye is used to defying the odds. In year number three, the 25-year old has a new challenge.

"They’re making me better, because they want it just as bad. You have everybody going at it that full speed, that full rate. You need that. Good competition is gonna make the team even better," Tye says.

It’s a crowded competition at tight end. Tye is competing with four other players for reps in training camp
Two of them, first round draft pick Evan Engram and former Minnesota Viking Rhett Ellison are guaranteed to make the team. Meaning Tye is battling for one of the final spots.

"They’re teaching me things. I'm teaching them things. Obviously, they haven't been here, so I’m helping them with the plays, but they may have a certain skill set that I don't have," Tye says.

"We ask a lot of our tight ends. They can handle the responsibilities, off the line, in line, in the slot …," says Giants head Coach Ben McAdoo.

Just like in 2015, Tye has to convince coaches he's worthy of making the roster. The Giants longest tenured tight end says he's been proving people wrong since he started.

"’Cause everybody has that goal to come to the next level and just to see somebody that you were playing with, somebody that also went to the same school as you that puts that good feeling, okay, you what? I could do that if I just work hard, stay focused and do the right thing. You can be here as well," Tye says.
