Burke Rehabilitation hosts 38th annual Wheelchair Games

Table tennis, wheelchair basketball and track are among events conducted in White Plains

Hundreds came out Saturday for the 38th annual Wheelchair Games in White Plains.

"I'm excited, this is my third year," says participant Shaniqua Freeman.

Table tennis, wheelchair basketball and track are some of the events taking place at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.

The games provide physically challenged competitors with an opportunity to showcase their abilities.

"It's a great way of people to come together in a supportive environment. They would not have the opportunity to compete in any of these sports elsewhere," says Burke Rehabilitation Hospital Vice President Richard Sgaglio.

Organizers say although it might be all fun and games, there's a bigger meaning behind the event.

"These games make participants feel like they are part of a larger community,” says Sgaglio. “That they are in an environment where people are not judgmental, or won't put them down based on their ability level."

The games are open to anyone in a wheelchair and will be going on until 5 p.m.
