Free backpacks with school supplies distributed to Yonkers families in need

Children get chance to make a confident start to new school year

The first day of school is right around the corner. And some children and parents in Yonkers received the chance to make an easier transition into the new school year.

Volunteer organizations, the Islamic Circle of North America Relief and the Muslim American Society, gave out free school supplies to families in need at the Andalusia School.

The organization, based in Queens, says that, since 2009, they've filled more than 100,000 backpacks with supplies for children to head back to school with confidence, and that their giveaway in Yonkers is always their biggest turnout in the state of New York.

This year, they hope to give out 30,000 backpacks throughout the country and give all children the opportunity to get a fulfilling education.

"We believe education is power. It's something that's going to defeat the ignorance that is out there,” ICNA Relief volunteer Omar Rengynwala says. “It's going to make our children have a very bright future. And that's one of the most important things, I believe."

At the Cross County Mall across town, MVP Healthcare, along with barbers from Yogi'z, offer free basic haircuts for students. The organization says that haircuts can also build confidence in children so they can succeed in the school year.

In addition, parents will also be able to learn about low-cost health insurance options for their family.
