Mount Vernon’s Pennington School to get makeover with new facilities

Officials break ground on plan to phase out middle school, reconfigure district

Though construction has already begun, Mount Vernon school officials pushed a golden shovel into the dirt at Pennington School Monday and officially broke ground on a makeover.

The Mount Vernon City School District's $108 million bond was passed in March of 2016 and the Pennington School will now get a new addition to their building. The middle school is being phased out and the school will transform into a kindergarten through 8th grade facility.

The new additions include 12 classrooms, science labs and a library media center as well as restoration of the basketball courts, baseball fields and soccer field.

Kieve Graham from Mount Vernon voted for the bond. His 7-year-old daughter will be entering third grade and he's excited about the renovations. "I think it’s needed,” says Graham. “The amount of taxes was minimal and the structure needed to be upgraded."

Graham says, however, that he has reservations about having younger students mixing with eighth graders.

"I see what they’re saying and I’m hopeful, but sometimes kids need to be separated. I’m hoping it works," says Graham.

The project is set to be completed in one year.
