Mount Vernon mayor releases 2018 proposed budget

Mayor Richard Thomas aims to prioritize public safety, add more police and firefighters to the force

Facing opposition at every turn from the City Council and the Comptroller's Office, Mayor Richard Thomas presented his proposed budget for 2018.

If Mayor Thomas’ budget is approved, the city will finally see a full-time police commissioner restored.

In previous weeks, City Comptroller Maureen Walker lost her bid to run for re-election in November. And now for the first time in 25 years, the finances of Mount Vernon will be in the hands of someone else.

Following the budget meeting, Walker pins her loss on what she calls lies and false accusations by Mayor Thomas.

"It's all about money. The mayor wanted access to the funds, and people were just so blinded by him,” says Walker. “They didn't see the lies that he put out there."
