Two Yonkers brothers run to build homes for veterans

Funds being raised for Habitat for Humanity of Westchester

Two brothers from Yonkers are running for a cause — giving back to veterans. They participated Sunday in the half-marathon in Yonkers.

About 13 miles lay ahead of brothers Stephen and Jimmy Veneruso. They're running the half marathon in Yonkers to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Westchester — everything raised going towards homes for veterans.

"With everything going on in the world, a lot of times they are forgotten," says Stephen.

Stephen has been involved for a number of years with Habitat for Humanity and giving back to those who serve he says was an easy choice. "We're about $4,000 now and with a couple more donations coming in today close to 5," says Stephen.

Jimmy says, "So luckily with Facebook and all the social media it took a lot of the legwork out of the fundraising. So we were able to get the word out there."

For Stephen, it's his third time running the Yonkers half-marathon. As for his brother — he's a first timer.

They trained for about two months to get ready for what some say is one of the hardest courses in the nation because of Yonkers' hills.

Jimmy says, "It will be a lot of eye of the tiger. I will probably get sick of it around the halfway point."

But there’s plenty of encouragement from Habitat's CEO, Jim Killoran. "I always say 'I am not going to run for nothing.' So if you are going to run, run for Habitat,” says Killoran. “One of the ‘s’ in sports stands for service. The Veneruso brothers have done it."

This is the home on High Street in Yonkers that Jimmy and Stephen's donation will go toward and Killoran says it means so much to one veteran and his family.

"You know that's the trim, that's the doors,” says Killoran. “That's the finishing touches on what I call battle hill, where we took four crack houses, and we are moving Alvin and his wife, who is a veteran into that home."

Killoran says every veteran should come back to a job and a home. He hopes more people will follow in Jimmy and Stephen's footsteps.
