Boy Scouts sleeping outdoors to raise awareness of homelessness

Members of Troop 21 will also host a food drive and distribute the food to families in need

SUFFERN - Homelessness is considered an epidemic in several cities across the United States. In order to raise awareness and gain a better understanding of what America's homeless population goes through on a daily basis, a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 21 are spending a night sleeping outdoors.

The scouts will spend the night camped outside of the Town of Ramapo municipal building and will also host a food drive at a local Walmart and distribute the food to families in need.

"I feel like it's important for people to understand," said Amzad Ali, a scout. "People don't really do much for them, so I think doing this will raise awareness for the importance of supporting homeless people."

The troop has been conducting this event annually since 2013 and has raised over $3,800 in that time. This year, they are hoping to raise more than $4,000.
