Rain, gloom fail to put a damper on 40th annual Columbus Day parade in Harrison

Hundreds came out to celebrate and take part in community tradition

The 40th annual "It's great to live in Harrison" celebration and Columbus Day parade was held on Halstead Avenue Monday morning.

The rainy, gloomy weather didn't stop hundreds of people from coming out to celebrate Columbus Day in Harrison.

Parade-goers waved Italian and American flags and a model of the Santa Maria, one of Christopher Columbus' three ships, floated down Halstead Avenue in the Columbus Day parade.

Harrison residents, young and old, say they keep coming back year after year to take part in what they call a great tradition in the community.

The yearly event, also known as the "It's great to live in Harrison" celebration, embraces all cultures, not just Italian-Americans.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, the Harrison cheerleaders, the marching band, local elected officials and more walked the parade route to Riis Park.

And whether you come to recognize "Indigenous People's Day" or Columbus Day,” people say the Harrison celebration is a great time for everyone.
