It may be early, but prepping for school is costly, with the average cost of school supplies for children in kindergarten through 12th grade ballooning to nearly $100 dollars, according to the National Retail Federation.

And with prices are only going up, the Harrison Wireless Zone on Halstead Avenue helped ease the cost today with their fifth annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

Wireless Zone and the Cellular Connection teamed up with the "Culture of Good" to provide children with a backpack filled with school supplies including books, notebooks, pencils, folders, and more.

"We're doing this as a give back community event to people who are really in need," said Chris Cosentino, a store manager.

"I think it's a really good thing for the community; gives back to the community and shows that they really care,” said Kirstie Normington of Yonkers. “It's not just about selling phones, technology. It's really good to give back.”

More than 1,300 Wireless Zone and TCC stores across the country are taking part in the giveaway and more than 230,000 backpacks are going to children in need.
