A wake was held Tuesday for Walter Mallinson, 56, a retired Harrison police officer who responded to Ground Zero on September 11, 2001.

Mallinson passed away on September 9, just days before the 16th anniversary of the attacks, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dozens of police officers filed into the Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home in Mamaroneck to hail the former officer as a hero, who selflessly responded to Ground Zero after the Twin Towers were struck and collapsed.

Mallinson is not one of over 1,300 people who have died from an illness stemming from exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.

A funeral mass for Mallinson will be held on Wednesday morning, September 13 at St. Gregory's Church in Harrison.

Mallinson leaves behind a wife and two children.
