The commute across the old Tappan Zee Bridge will start to become a distant memory as constructors begin to demolish the 61-year-old span.

The closure of River Road through the communities of South Nyack and Grandview in Rockland County will begin on Monday, Oct. 10 and is expected to continue into November for six days a week.

The State Thruway Authority and transportation officials have established an alternate route for the commuter bus service, and cyclists are strongly encouraged to avoid the area through November.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that work on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is ahead of schedule.
