Coaches seek to file suit over decision to move location of basketball championship

Officials push to bring tournament back to the Westchester County Center

WHITE PLAINS — For the first time since the 1930s, the High School Basketball Championships won't be played at the Westchester County Center. The Section One Athletics Council opted to move the tournament to neutral sites and have the championships played at Pace University's Pleasantville campus. Earlier this week, Westchester County Executive George Latimer met with Section One officials to try and bring the games back to the county center.

Latimer said the executive committee held a vote on Jan. 3 to reaffirm their decision to move the basketball tournament to a different venue. However, one high school basketball coach says there's no record that a vote took place.

"The only thing I can think of is that the county executive was misled which in this particular situation wouldn't surprise me because the coaches, and I think the athletic directors of Section One have been misled for the last three months," Saunders High School Basketball Coach Anthony Nicodemo said.

Coach Nicodemo says the move may have violated the Section One constitution and the Coaches Association is seeking litigation.
