MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon police are trying to determine the cause of death of a 2-year-old boy who died after being found unconscious by his mother in their apartment at Esplanade Gardens on Monday, April 16.

The child’s mother returned home from work Monday at around 8 p.m. and found her 2-year-old son unconscious in their apartment. He was taken to Montefiore Hospital where he later died on the morning of Tuesday, April 17.

Mount Vernon police were on scene throughout Monday night at the Esplanade Gardens Apartment building, and they are currently treating the death as suspicious and investigating the cause. They collected several bags of evidence before leaving the scene. As of now, investigators are focusing their attention on the last person who was caring for the toddler while his mother was at work.

Members of the toddler’s neighborhood were saddened by the news.

"No kid deserves to die that way, and I pray to God to bring justice to the light for that little boy," Anselme Woodard said.

One member of the neighborhood says that these type of incidents are rare for the area.

“This is a very peaceful neighborhood, and we don’t usually have that. You know, kids play free,” a member of the neighborhood said.

However, an individual who lives in Esplanade Gardens says that they have been noticing suspicious tenants moving in recently.

“I have noticed that some of the renters have been a little questionable, to say the least,” a resident of Esplanade Gardens said.

Mount Vernon police were expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, but it was canceled 45 minutes prior to being held. The police released a statement saying, “Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, the Mount Vernon Police Dept. is postponing the press briefing."

An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of the toddler’s death. Both the mother and the toddler's names have not been released.
