Monticello PD: Suspect in Galleria Mall shooting surrenders to authorities

Michael Perez-Rodriguez, 27, is facing charges of reckless endangerment and misdemeanor assault

WALLKILL — Michael Perez-Rodriguez, 27, has turned himself in to authorities after his gun went off inside the Galleria at Crystal Run.

Perez-Rodriguez has been charged with a single count of reckless endangerment and two counts of misdemeanor assault for the two people he injured when his gun went off. No gun charges were filed against him because he had a legal carry permit.

According to police, Perez-Rodriguez fired a single shot into the floor outside of an American Eagle store. The bullet then ricocheted, striking the two victims in their legs. Police have not ascribed a motive to the incident, simply saying that they "don't" believe the shooting was an accident.

Perez-Rodriguez has been remanded to Orange County Jail on $2,500 cash or $500 bond. He is due back in Wallkill Town Court for his first appearance on Monday, Dec. 4.
