Man hit by 1 or more vehicles in Mount Vernon: PD

Witnesses say the man’s body was lying on a main thoroughfare for hours

MOUNT VERNON — Police are trying to figure out what happened to a man whose lifeless body was found lying in the street in Mount Vernon.

The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was hit by an ambulette and possibly by another vehicle on Mount Vernon Avenue near Terrace Avenue early Thursday morning.

Police say the driver of the ambulette stayed on the scene.

Police are not identifying the victim or the driver of the ambulette as the investigation into what happened continues.

Maria Naddeo works at a bar near where it happened. She says she saw crime scene tape and police officers at the scene when she arrived for work at around 9 a.m.

"They already had a tent around the body already. They were waiting for the coroner to come. I think it happened around five in the morning," Naddeo said.

The scene was cleared by the afternoon but residents say a few blocks on Mount Vernon Avenue were blocked off for several hours while officers gathered evidence.

Officials say it's also possible the victim may have been hit by a car before that.

"I feel sorry for the guy. Laying in the street all those hours like that. You don't want your life to end like that you know," Naddeo said.

Authorities will determine a cause of death after an autopsy is performed.
