Nanuet HS students to start classes an hour later in the fall

District believes that later start times and more sleep will lead to better academic performance.

NANUET- Nanuet High School District plans to change class times so they begin one hour later starting in September. The district believes that this will help sleep-deprived teens improve their academic performance. Currently, students at the high school begin their classes at 7:20 a.m., once the change takes effect in the fall classes will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:10 p.m.

Some students agree that this change will be beneficial.

"It gives people more chance to get homework done in the morning if they have to do it, and it gives them more time to learn before extracurricular activities," Nanuet High School student Julil Ressy said.

Students say this change will also help improve their commute.

"You can pretty much get extra time because for me every day I get, I’m pretty much late, I’m pretty much late for school every day," student Adam Emanuel said.

The principal says the changes will not adversely affect athletic scheduling. School officials in Nanuet have been looking at this switch in school start time for a few years now.

Nanuet High School will be the second Rockland County school to adopt a later start time. In 2015, South Orangetown moved forward with a later schedule, and the change was well received by parents. Nanuet has also received some positive feedback on the upcoming change in start time.

A study by the American Academy of Pediatricians issued a recommendation that classes for both high and middle scholars shouldn't start before 8:30 a.m., students at that age have unique sleep rhythms that make it harder for them to go to sleep and wake up than other people.

Others schools in the district, like Clarkstown, have thought about the idea of a later start time but haven't made the change due to some issues that it will cause when it comes to their school bus schedules.
