New Rochelle makes pitch to Amazon to be home of retailer’s second headquarters

City proposes downtown area and Davids Island as 2 possible sites

NEW ROCHELLE — Thursday marks the deadline for cities to pitch to why they should be the home of their second headquarters. New Rochelle is one of the latest to submit their proposals, but it isn't the only city in Westchester County who wants it.

According to Forbes, is worth over $400 billion and New Rochelle wants the internet and catalog retailer in its city limits.

"Come on Amazon! Come to New Rochelle! We want you!" says local resident Margaret Chadwick. She adds that it's exciting her city wants Amazon and anybody would want to work and live the area. But New Rochelle is not the only one.

Cities across the country are trying to win over Amazon, including at least three others in Westchester County.

New Rochelle sent Amazon 44 pages of services it can provide before Thursday’s deadline. In the document, it proposes two possible sites like the downtown area and Davids Island.

Thanks to the city's master development agreement with developer RXR Realty, the world's fifth largest company could have nearly 9 million square feet between four different areas.

What also could set New Rochelle apart from the others is its proximity to New York City and its 90-day approval process for downtown buildings.

Mayor Noam Bramson believes it's a no-brainer for Amazon to choose New Rochelle.

“New Rochelle is a remarkable community. We are ideally situated, we have extraordinary transit access, we have a talented and diverse population and we are ready to roll,” Mayor Bramson says.

The company said bids must include a 500,000 square foot facility with an expected $5 billion in private investment. Amazon says this will help create 50,000 or so jobs and about $100,000 a year.

New Rochelle also gave Westchester County a more condensed version so the county can include it in its large-scale bid which includes Somers, White Plains, and Yonkers.
