Parents of Binghamton stabbing victim fly to Rye Brook from Brazil for son's vigil

Community remembers Joao Souza after he was stabbed to death in his university dorm room

RYE BROOK — The parents of the Rye Brook teenager killed at Binghamton University visited their son’s former high school to mourn with the community on Wednesday. Joao Souza’s parents live in Brazil, and the school superintendent said that the event gave them a place to be surrounded by support.

“It shows love and support and respect for the family who is in mourning. So, all around I think it’s a positive attribute to the family that’s suffering right now,” said Antoinette Montesano, a parent referencing the vigil turnout.

On April 15, Souza died after being stabbed multiple times in his dorm room. The next night, Binghamton University Police arrested a fellow student, 20-year-old Michael Roque, and charged him with second-degree murder for Souza’s death.

Souza’s parents are expected to continue north to Binghamton this week.
