PD: Man wanted in Illinois arrested in connection with Newburgh woman's death

59-year-old fugitive is charged with murder


NEWBURGH — A fugitive with a warrant out of Illinois was arrested in connection with the death of a Newburgh woman on Monday.

The Newburgh Police Department found Tanya Smith, 47, dead in her home on Carson Avenue over the weekend.

Police arrested Kevin Cook, 59, and charged him with second-degree murder.

Cook is a fugitive wanted on a warrant issued in August out of Illinois. Before his arrest, he was staying with a relative in Newburgh.

Newburgh officials say the investigation is ongoing.
