KIRYAS JOEL — New York State police say a school bus struck and killed 6-year-old Leah Mezzi on Friday around 11:15 a.m. near the intersection of Acres Road and Lemberg Court.

Investigators believe the child got off the bus and went to cross the street, but then abruptly changed directions and was hit. The school bus driver stayed at the scene.

The state police reconstruction team worked for hours in trying to figure out what happened. Members of the Orthodox community could be seen cleansing the accident scene according to custom.

Most of the people in the residential community get around on foot. Some say Acres Road is dangerous because people speed and it always busy. There are several signs down Acres Road to inform drivers to slow down and that there are children in the area.

Some parents say they are keeping a closer eye on their children after this incident.

FiOS1 News reached out to the Kiryas Joel School District, who operated the bus for comment but have not heard back.

Police say the little girl was from Brooklyn and was staying with relatives while her parents attended a wedding.

Her funeral was held Friday following the accident.
