Truck hits overpass a day before officials meet to find solution to recurring issue

The collision caused major traffic on Route 9A in Briarcliff Manor

BRIARCLIFF MANOR — A truck driving southbound on Route 9A in Briarcliff Manor crashed into the Pleasantville road overpass around 9:15 this morning.

Village police say they needed a heavy duty tow truck and an hour-and-a-half to finally dislodge the vehicle.

"The driver appeared to slow down when he got to the bridge so he became lodged under the bridge, trying to see if he actually fit under the bridge," Police Lieutenant Dominick Bueti said.

Unlike the Hutchinson River Parkway, trucks are allowed on Route 9A. But signs are posted before and above the bridge warning drivers of a low clearance.

This crash comes the day before Westchester County Executive George Latimer is set to meet with the State Department of Transportation about bridge strikes. On Monday, Latimer said he's looking forward to working with state and local officials to find solutions to reduce the number of truck-bridge collisions in Westchester

"Can we get it down to zero? Probably not. Can we get it down from being a weekly event? I mean this is a weekly situation," Latimer said.

The New York State Department of Transportation says there was no damage to the bridge. The driver may face fines for the incident.
