Officials: Woman rescued from Newburgh house fire dies from injuries

The woman was inside the burning home with a 2-year-old boy who also later died

NEWBURGH — A woman who was rescued from a house fire in Newburgh that took the life of a two-year-old boy has died from her injuries.

Officials say the second victim could have been the stepmother or the foster mother of the two-year-old boy.

The fire happened just after 4 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving at 109 Coach Lane in a home that was occupied by 11 people.

A neighbor who was one of the first people on the scene says he helped rescue the father from the burning home but was unable to help the woman and child that were trapped in the house because the smoke became too thick.

He says fire crews came shortly after to rescue them

Police confirmed the death of the 2-year-old boy on Friday. The woman was in critical condition before police confirmed that she died late Saturday night.

Five first responders, three police officers, and two firefighters were also hospitalized after the fire and treated for smoke inhalation

The entire incident is still under investigation as crews try to determine what could have started this fire.
