Bus driver describes verbal, physical abuse from passengers

Burin Sylaj says he was threatened to be killed after teenagers threw things, kicked him

YONKERS — Bus driver Burin Sylah on Tuesday described what he felt was a nightmare when he encountered four teenagers who punched and kicked the 38-year-old on a southbound Liberty Lines bus on Saturday afternoon. Sylah says the situation started when he asked the teens to pay a fare to ride the bus.

"They were abusing me," Sylah said. "And they left from the bus, but then started coming back. One of them came and kicked me ... So, I decided to step up from the seat and just kick him back."

Sylah acknowledges that the teens verbally abused him before during previous bus rides, but says on Saturday that they threatened to kill him. He is now taking medicine for the pains he received from the incident.

Peter Rostoni, the vice president of New York's public transit union, Local 100 TWU, says the whole situation could have been avoided if the buses had partitions for the drivers.
