Rockland Meals on Wheels provides hot meals, companionship for seniors

The program has 400 volunteers that serve 900 meals around the county

Meals on Wheels of Rockland County delivers to home-bound seniors or those who can't get to the supermarket every day.

In Nanuet, about 400 volunteers work to provide more than 900 meals around the county.

Maureen Nicolich with Meals on Wheels says people may think because Rockland County is an affluent community, seniors aren't in need. But she says quite the contrary. Many seniors living on fixed incomes and property taxes keep going up.

Aside from a warm healthy meal, Nicolich says a visit can mean a lot to a senior living alone.

On the program’s calendar, a trip to Stew Leonard’s, bowling and pet therapy are planned. Meals on Wheels also provides transportation to the centers for seniors who can't drive. There are no shortage of choices and opportunities for seniors to make new friends. Most say coming to a center doesn't just mean a warm meal but something to look forward to.

There is no fee to join, but members have to live in the county and be over the age of 60.

Meals on Wheels of Rockland County is always in need of volunteers and funding. If you would like to help you can go to
