Yonkers firefighters to endorse city council candidate in hopes of getting new firehouse

Firefighters frustrated with the lack of progress and say lives are in jeopardy

Lawmakers in Yonkers already approved the about $10 million project, but firefighters say progress is slow and lives are in jeopardy.

Dozens of Yonkers firefighters gathered on New School Street Thursday to demand a new firehouse for the southwest area of the city. They say they are endorsing a candidate for city council who can make it happen.

Yonkers Firefighter Union President Barry McGoey blames poor Yonkers leadership for the firehouse not being rebuilt quickly since the building was condemned in 2015. The building used to be home to the rescue company, tasked with saving the lives of fellow firefighters and victims at a fire.

Now the rescue company is housed near the Empire City Casino across town. Firefighters say people aren't safe in the most populated area of the city.

The rescue company is about 13 minutes away with traffic; it could take them longer to respond.

Firefighters are now putting their support behind Mike Khader for Yonkers City Council. He says if elected he will bring the fire station to Yonkers.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has promised a new firehouse will be built here across the street from the old firehouse. But remediation for the site had held things up.

In June the city council approved a resolution to borrow $58.8 million for various projects in the city's 2017-18 capital budget. That list includes borrowing $10 million for the firehouse.

In a statement Mayor Mike Spano's office questioned this rally, saying in part:

"They are well aware the final plans will be released within days and shovels should be in the ground in the next few months."

Voters will have to see if Khader gets elected in November, and if his campaign promise becomes a reality.
