After a horrific 7.1 magnitude earthquake devastated parts of Mexico on Tuesday, Westchester residents with ties to the area are fervently trying to reach out to family members.

The quake hit about 75 miles southeast of Mexico City, leveling buildings, burying homes and schools, and killing over 200 people.

Many are still buried in the rubble.

"Very scary, scary for my family," Mariela Moran said after seeing the horrifying and heartbreaking images of the quake’s destruction. "I saw people crying, screaming. And I say, ‘wow.’ I can't explain to you how you feel."

Her first thought was to get in touch with her family. Her sister and two children live in Mexico City in an area which is dealing with damage.

"I called her and you know the internet is down, everything is down," Moran said.

After desperately making attempt after attempt, she received no answer. When the phone didn't work, she tried Facebook with no luck.

“I shake, I am crying," Moran said.

Then early this morning, Moran got in contact with her sister Cristal and found out that everyone is okay. She also reached her mom and dad who live about three hours south of Mexico City though she's still waiting to hear from cousins.

For now, she considers her family very lucky.

"I am praying for everybody," Moran said.

For those who want to help, UNICEF Mexico and the Mexican Red Cross are currently accepting donations.
