More than 400 students are now enrolled in full-day pre-kindergarten for the 2017/18 school year in Mount Vernon. The city began the formal expansion of the program two years ago and is aiming to provide full-day pre-K to every eligible child in the city.

"The coast of child are is exorbitant," Dr. Gayle White-Wallace, the Director of pre-K in Mount Vernon, said. "So us being able to offer UPK-3 and Pre-K4 for our parents is amazing because so many parents can now go back to work and they can go back to work resting on the laurels that their that their children are in a safe place where they are loved and where they are going to learn and explore."

Like other Mount Vernon students, the pre-K students will come to school at 8:30 a.m. and stay for a full day, until 3 p.m.

Parents say they are looking forward to the educational benefits their children will receive from being part of a full-day program.
