New Castle taking measures to regulate where vape shops can open

Officials want to make sure the shops don’t open near schools, parks, playgrounds, or residential areas

With a vape shop already coming into the downtown area of Pleasantville, the Town of New Castle is taking steps to prevent any kind of vape shop from opening up in certain areas.

On Tuesday night, the New Castle Town Board held a meeting workshopping the proposed local law, mapping all the area where shops can open.

"While we don’t want to necessarily restrict capitalism,” said town board council member Lisa Katz. “We think there are many dangers associated with this and we want to make sure our residents and specifically our children are protected."

The town drafted a map showing Chappaqua, a hamlet of New Castle with blue points showing possible vape shop locations and purple points showing required buffers.

"Essentially, what we want to do is limit the location where a vape shop could not be located near a certain amount of feet of any park, playground, library, religious institution, or school," Katz said.

Some residents of the area say they don't think legislation like this will prevent vape using among young people while others welcome the restrictions.

"We need to preserve our nature, our kids, and our new generations against the chemicals. Please, don’t bring this to our city," Elizabeth Sneed of Chappaqua said.

The town board will further discuss the distance vape shops can be in relation to these specific areas at the next board meeting in September after they review a revised map.
