New City motorist becomes first driver to cross the Mario Cuomo Bridge

Chelsea Christonikos was headed home from her job in Westchester County when she made the historic crossing

In the early hours of Saturday morning, August 26, Chelsea Christonikos's trip home became a historic one when the 24-year-old became the very first driver to cross the newly-built Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

"As I was driving, there was a trooper in between two lanes with his lights on and was slowing traffic down, then he pulled over in front of us at probably 1:15 and stopped all traffic, and someone came up and said 'You're going to be the first person over the bridge,'" Christonikos said.

A police officer with the Metropolitan Transportation Agency, Christonikos was leaving work, crossing from Westchester back into Rockland County. Christonikos says that she definitely won't miss sitting in traffic on the bridge, something she thinks the new bridge will help alleviate.
