Ellis Island has served as a symbol of hope and opportunity for some many families coming to the United States, and now the U.S. Mint is giving people the chance to keep a bit of that hope in their pockets, with the release of a new coin dedicated to the national landmark

The coin is the 39th in the "America the Beautiful" quarters program, paying homage to the island that acted as a gateway to the United States for millions of immigrants.

"there's a lot going on in the United States," said Todd Baldau, Senior Advisor tot he Deputy Director of the U.S. Mint. "There's a lot going on with the history of the nation and one of the best ways to touch our history is to remember where we all came from. It really does help America connect through coins."

The reverse side of the quarter depicts the hospital that sits on the New Jersey side of the island and an immigrant family of three. Designed by artist Barbara Fox, she says her inspiration fro the design was Ellis ISland's nickname, "The Island of Hope, the Island of Tears".

The coin entered circulation on Wednesday.
