Gyms see spike in January memberships as new year gets underway

Research shows, however, that only 8 percent achieve fitness goals

Forty percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions and going to the gym continues to be the most popular one, according to the University of Scranton.

At one gym in Yonkers, more people signed up this week in January than ever expected.

According to fitness.gov, 80 percent of adults don't even meet their exercise guidelines.

Lenny Sarrero, owner of Westchester Workout in Ossining, says that a big mistake those who first join the gym make is actually going too often. This may be why research suggests that only eight percent of people actually achieve their New Year’s goals.

Sarrero gives advice for those who want to make it to the gym past Jan. 31. He recommends people go only twice a week to get used to the exercise.

Sarrero also recommends adjusting gym visits around one’s work schedule.
