Kei Nishikori defeats Noah Rubin in New York Open

The Merrick native started out with a bang but lost his ground during the second set

UNIONDALE — Day three of the inaugural New York Open at the Nassau Coliseum is underway and the lone local competing in the tennis tournament is Merrick native Noah Rubin.

Noah Rubin has only been a professional tennis player for three years. The 21-year-old grew up just 10 minutes away from the arena and still trains at Sportime Syosset.

Rubin has already played against his idol Roger Federer in the 2017 Australian Open, but on Tuesday, he played a match against Kei Nishikori

In his first set, Rubin won the first three points, but Nishikori soon proved why he was a former ranked player in the world. In the second set, it was Rubin playing catch up and although the Merrick native gave a good fight, he ultimately fell six to three. But Rubin says he's grateful for everyone that came out to support him

The New York Open will be at the Nassau Coliseum for the entire week. Champions will be crowned Sunday afternoon.
