Six national guardsmen from the 105th Airlift Wing at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh are heading to Texas to pick up the heroic members of the 106th Airlift Wing and two Blackhawk helicopters that were critical to the search and rescue efforts in and around Houston after Hurricane Harvey.

Major Matthew Preston will be flying the massive C-17 Globemaster which has been tasked with making picking up their compatriots from Texas. Maj. Preston himself was once a member of the 106th Airlift Wing, out of Westhampton Beach, Long Island, and says that he could not be more proud of his former unit, watching them rescue hundreds of people from floodwaters.

"It's amazing, it's... tear jerking," Preston said.

"They did awesome," Staff Sergeant Matthew Rzomp said. "It felt really great to know I was a part of bringing them down."

While it is unclear if the flight will need to make multiple stops for supplies as the recovery effort continues in the south, Maj. Preson says that New York's National Guardsmen are standing ready to help.
