Orange DA weighs in on guilty plea of women accused in fiancé’s kayaking death

David Hoovler says he is happy with the plea, but says there were difficulties in the case

Angelika Graswald -- the Orange County woman who admitted to sabotaging her fiancé’s kayak, ultimately leading to his drowning death -- pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide on Monday, and could serve a maximum of four years in state prison.

Today the Orange County District Attorney in Goshen weighs on in the plea.

David Hoovler, the district attorney says he is happy with Graswald's plea, but he says there were difficulties in the case -- there is little direct precedent in New York for a homicide conviction for removing a plug in a kayak

He says Graswald merely removing the plug from Viafore's kayak alone is not sufficient in causing the victim's death.

The district attorney says Graswald's conditional release date would likely be sometime towards the end of the year, but this is up to the Department of Corrections.
