Paying it forward for Michael Coffey in Pearl River

Family hosts fundraiser in honor of ex-Dominican College Assistant Basketball Coach who died in 2016

In his lifetime, Michael Coffey did not let muscular dystrophy stop him from becoming an assistant basketball coach at Dominican College at Blavelt.

Now, a year after his death in 2016, family and friends of Coffey are using his spirit of kindness and generosity to give back to the community by starting a foundation in his honor, beginning with a fundraising dinner and raffle on Thursday evening.

"He was a 'pay it forward' guy," said Brian Lyons, Coffey's uncle. "That's what this is about. It's about what little Michael would want and that's what we're doing."

Coffey's family says that they know the cost of caring for people with special needs like their son, so they are planning for the foundation to give financial aid to Rockland and Bergen County families dealing with muscular dystrophy.
