Peekskill mayor threatens to sue Con Edison if company doesn’t fix roads, sidewalks

Safety concerns result from gas line work that dug up sidewalks, caused potholes

Deteriorating roads in one northern Westchester County community is upsetting residents and public officials.

The mayor of Peekskill is threatening to sue Con Edison if it doesn't step up to fix roads and sidewalks dug up to install a new gas line.

A massive underground gas line project funded by Con Edison is under construction in Peekskill.

Residents and drivers are complaining about the awful condition of several major roads in the city. Uneven pavements, dug up sidewalks, and potholes have caused damage to cars as well as crashes, according to locals.

Mayor Frank Catalina says Con Edison began construction almost a year ago and there hasn't been much progress made since.

Last week, Catalina sent a letter to the company demanding they provide a timeframe for the gas line's completion and for repaving, according to reports.

If the utility company doesn't respond within 10 days or provide a reasonable timeframe to repave, Catalina is threatening to sue for reimbursement costs as the city will be forced to repave the streets on its own.

Another concern for residents is pedestrian safety. Bicyclists and people walking on the street have been warned to be extra cautious and watch out potholes on roads like North Division Street.
