WHITE PLAINS — A new year brings new leadership for the Westchester County Board of Legislators with new and returning members at their first meeting in White Plains. There are 17 members in total with Democrats in the majority, led by County Executive George Latimer.

In a vote of 12-3, a new chairman of the board was elected on Monday night: Democrat and legislator since 2015, Ben Boykin. Three lawmakers from his own party voted against him. As chair, Boykin can decide which bills move to the floor for a vote, and he can make committee appointments. Boykin and other Democrats say they will work to get a bill passed that protects undocumented immigrants and a bill that ends gun shows on county property, two items that couldn't be passed under former county executive and Republican Rob Astorino.
