Runners take off through the city for Yonkers Marathon 2017

It’s the second oldest marathon in the nation

The country's second oldest marathon was held Sunday in Westchester Country. Hundreds ran through the streets of Yonkers for the 92nd annual Yonkers Marathon.

And they're off after a quick speech from Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. He says, "It's undoubtedly the toughest marathon in America and you have the courage to run it."

The marathon has a long history. It's the 2nd oldest marathon in the United States and also a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

Many runners say it's one of the toughest.

Amy Lamberti says, "I think the full marathon in Yonkers is probably one of the hardest marathons you could do. You're running with the traffic and there's not a lot of fans."

It brings runners from all around the world into the city. Sreeni Hosamane says, "I traveled from India to run this race."

And tons of seasoned runners. "I ran a race in Austin for six years and I got a medal for running in my age category last time," says Joanna Oleson.

Although Spano cheered on the runners, he didn't run himself. “Do I look like I run marathons? No, I have not, but who knows, never say never," says the mayor.
