Facility for emotionally troubled children closes after violent incidents

Decision came after a student from Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School broke into nearby home and threatened a family with a box cutter


VALHALLA — Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School, a rehabilitation center for emotionally troubled children was closed after a series of violent incidents involving students from the facility.

For many residents, the breaking point came last week when a student broke into a home near the facility and threatened a family with a box cutter.

"Enough was enough last Tuesday, when a 17-year-old went into a local household here," said State Senator Terrence Murphy, a longtime critic of the facility.

David Rivel, CEO of the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services has said that the facility will close in the next six to nine months. The closure impacts over 50 students at the school.
