On Monday, people across the nation and around the world are remembering former First Lady Nancy Reagan – known for the issues she championed and perhaps her biggest legacy of all – her unbeatable and unbreakable love with Ronald Reagan that endured more than half a century.

To the rest of the country, he was President Ronald Reagan
But to her, he was just "Ronnie."

Their romance was captured by decades of intimate letters written by Ronald Reagan from the early years of a relationship that would span more than half a century.

“My darling, I love you so very much. I don't even mind that life made me wait so long to find you. The waiting made the feeling sweeter,” he said in a letter.

Both actors, their romance began in Tinsletown in the early 1950s.

After they were married, Ronald continued his acting career but Nancy retired, staying home to raise their two children and her two stepchildren, saying her life truly began when she married him.

James Rosebush – Nancy's longest serving chief of staff and author of "True Reagan" – says the love the Reagans shared was the real deal.

Nancy became Ronald’s fiercely devoted caretaker while he suffered from Alzheimer's in the final years of his life. She told Diane Sawyer that during his last moments, her beloved somehow managed to give her one last goodbye.

"If a death can be peaceful and lovely, that one was,” Nancy said.

“Ronnie all of a sudden turned his head and looked at me and opened his eyes and just looked and then he closed them. What a gift he gave me at that point. What a wonderful gift," she added.
